Journal 6

Writer: waterdlonwaterdlon

Reading through Ryan’s journal multiple times were certainly interesting. Throughout the initial presentation in class, it was a bit hard to follow completely with what was being said, similar to the other presentations. However having the website with the slides presented along side the script he used allowed me to have a better and complete understand of his presentation.

First thing is like to note is the opening, which clearly states what will be discussed, in simple terms. For a quick explanation, Ryan wanted yo discuss how social media in the modern age works, tackle the media itself in different aspects and terms Mcluhan used within his writings and studies.

Social Media as the chosen media to talk about is something I thought was an interesting choice. It's a very modern and fairly new form of an interactive platform, more on this eill be discussed later. It's very broad, with numerous amounts of great examples to observe and analysis for an assignment like this. It's also a constant evolving medium, however, I think it's safe to say that social media has sort of platue as far as how they work or what they bring to the table.

The way he looked into social media was interesting. Obviously there was a point made within the presentation about how the medium is the message. However, an interesting point made, which is also something McLuhan talked about, is how media is not just ‘channels’ or simple straight forward lanes that only broadcast one specific thing. Rather social media is a collected group of channels that, as stated in the script, “restructure how we perceive the world.”. I also really liked how hot and cold media was explained through social and how it essential carters to both sides of the spectrum. What’s interesting to think about, that I felt was only lightly touched on when on the subject of Hot and Cold media, was the sort of need for how diversity social media is in that respect. When reading through how certain aspects of social media was hot or cold, I was wondering, ‘how it would change if there was less of one of these aspects?’. The anwser I thought of, it would be restricted and be relegated to something similar to TV. In a way, social media is very unique in that way and I wish it was touched on a bit more. Another part of the presentation that I liked a lot was the part about how social media kind of gives in a bit to a person's narcissism, which I think is somewhat of a problem with social media.

The pictures were honestly the weakest part of the whole presentation, but by all means, do think they are bad. For the most part, the picture are very straightforward and to the point, which works well in the contexts of a time presentation. looking over it though, taking my time to see how each photo connects with each point, they seem a bit bland. I like the ai generated one of the phone being summerged in ice while on fire, it did a really interesting job visualizing how social media connects to hot and cold media.
